Introduction 

Interviewing is arguably the most enjoyable part of a counter fraud investigators duties but having spent time gathering evidence we don’t want to fall at the last hurdle with a less than effective IUC.

This course will provide you with an understanding of the various factors that need to be considered when planning an interview under caution.

What the Course covers

By the end of the learning you will be able to:

  • Apply the seven principles of investigative interviewing
  • Determine what needs to go into a written interview plan
  • Process investigative data for example timelines and mapping
  • Understand how and when to introduce exhibits/evidence
  • Manage the course of the interview
  • Identify the key topics that need to be covered
  • Understand the importance of briefing the second interviewer and establishing their role within the interview
  • Ensure the location is risk assessed, and the layout is conducive to an IUC
  • Recognise the importance of subject research
  • Define the roles of solicitor, interpreter and appropriate adult
  • Prepare for a pre interview briefing session with the defence lawyer
  • Handle prepared statements
  • Manage the conduct of those present, for example lawyer, interpreter, appropriate adult, carer
  • Understand the defence lawyers’ assessment of risk to their client of adverse inference being drawn
  • Plan for the suspect who exercises their right to silence
  • Prepare for an IUC using conversation management
  • Understand the importance of establishing rapport and a shared understanding
  • Handle significant statements/Unsolicited comments
  • Formulate questions designed to elicit full accounts
  • Plan for inappropriate or disruptive behaviour
  • Demonstrate the completion or a written interview plan with the use of a case study

Whether you are new to interviewing or an old hand who wants to brush up their skills the course is relevant for you and will provide you with the skills and knowledge to successfully conduct an effective interview under caution.

The Course is delivered over one day via the Zoom platform. We use a range of different methodologies to cater for all students learning.

Assessment and Accreditation Criteria

Students have the opportunity to assess their learning through small group exercises. Upon completion of the course, students will receive certification.
