Investigating Cyber Fraud

Aim

To provide Counter Fraud Investigators with the skills and knowledge to successfully conduct investigations in cyber space through an understanding of how fraudsters use Cyber Space to commit Cyber Fraud.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FOUNDATION)

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the core concepts of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and link analysis
  • Define the legal framework surrounding OSINT enquiries
  • Understand the basics of online networking (such as geolocation and IP addresses)
  • Conduct a basic OSINT investigation using freely available online tools
  • Avoid common pitfalls and red herrings in OSINT investigations
  • Demonstrate their understanding through practical methodologies for collating OSINT data on potential suspects

LEARNING OUTCOMES (ADVANCED)

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand advanced OSINT techniques, including investigation best practices and division of resources.
  • Use device and connection analysis data to supplement you’re theinvestigation.
  • Understand how to keep yourselfremainanonymous whilst conducting investigations.
  • Understand how to search for leaked data on the surface and ‘dark web’.
  • Conduct a full OSINT investigation. This part of the course will use a completely self-contained test area, with our own hardware.

All Counter Fraud Investigators and Managers who are involved in the investigation of Cyber Fraud

COURSE DELIVERY

This subject is delivered in two modules, a FOUNDATION module and an ADVANCED module. Modules can be combined and tailored to customers’ requirements.  To obtain maximum benefit from the ADVANCED module, students must have an understanding of how to investigate Cyber Fraud at a foundation level.The course is very interactive being practical skills and knowledge based.

ASSESSMENT AND TRAINERS

Students have the opportunity to assess their learning through the completion of a multiple choice test and, on successful completion, receive a certificate to evidence their Continuing Professional Development.  The course is delivered by an experienced and qualified trainer who is a subject matter expert in their field.

DURATION AND STUDENT NUMBERS

The FOUNDATION module is delivered over one day.  The ADVANCED module is delivered over three days. Both modules are delivered to a minimum of six students and a maximum of eight.
